Houghton on the Hill - 8 Miles
Houghton on the Hill Circular Walk
via Burton Overy and Kings Norton – A Flo4Paws Training Walk
📏 Distance: 12.6 km (approx. 8 miles)
📈 Elevation Gain: 191m
🔁 Route Type: Circular
📍 Start/End: Houghton on the Hill, Leicestershire
This 8-mile circular route starting from Houghton on the Hill is one of my go-to training walks for clients of Flo4Paws, especially for practicing Recall training in a real-world setting. It’s a brilliant blend of peaceful countryside, open fields, and quiet village lanes—ideal for building a dog’s confidence and focus outdoors.
As you pass through Burton Overy and Kings Norton, the walk offers long sight lines and open spaces, making it easier to spot other walkers and dogs well in advance—perfect for dogs who are still learning to manage distractions.
Why it's great for training:
-
Open field paths with good visibility
-
Low traffic footpaths and quiet villages
-
Varied terrain to build confidence and consistency
-
Space to work on distance recall, engagement, and loose lead walking
This walk is especially useful for nervous or reactive dogs, allowing gradual exposure in a calm, rural environment.
🍻 Post-walk treat: For you, not the dog! Pop into The Bell at Burton Overy or The Rose & Crown in Thurnby after your training session.
