Hi, it’s me, Gatsby! Let me tell you about one of my favorite walks—the Gunthorpe Loop. You know, the one where I get to stretch my legs, sniff new smells, and hopefully go swimming!
The day started off like any other, with my leash on and my tail wagging like crazy. Mum said we were going to Gunthorpe, and I couldn’t contain my excitement. The car ride was full of anticipation—I had my water toy ready, hoping for some splash time in the Trent.
But oh no… it was raining! Not the "fun rain that makes puddles to jump in," but the kind that makes Mum put on her raincoat and look at me like, “Please don’t get too messy.”
We started the walk at the Gunthorpe Car Park, opposite the Unicorn Hotel. Mum chatted about socialising at the cafe first, but all I could think about was the river. I behaved well (like the good boy I am), even when other dogs passed by. But when we got closer to the Trent, I couldn’t help but pull on my lead a little—okay, a lot!
Then it happened. I saw it. The water was right there, glistening and flowing, calling my name. I sat down (like I’d been trained to) and gave Mum my best pleading look.
“I know it’s raining, Mum, but are you sure I’m not allowed to go for a swim and retrieve my water toy, pleeease?”

She laughed but kept walking. I couldn’t believe it! How could she resist my face? Still, I followed her down the path like the loyal pup I am.
When we got to a quieter spot, Mum let me off-lead just for a moment. She said, “Okay, Gatsby, go ahead!” I jumped into the Trent with the biggest splash, tail wagging and heart full of joy. Swimming is my happy place—rain or shine. And retrieving my toy? It’s my mission in life!
By the time we finished the loop, I was soaked but oh-so-happy. Mum called me a “muddy rascal,” but I know she secretly loves it when I have fun. The Gunthorpe Loop never disappoints, and I’ll always be ready for my next adventure.
