For many nervous dogs, loud noises like gunfire can trigger fear and anxiety, making even the most peaceful countryside walks a challenge. Our own Gatsby, who has always been sensitive to sudden, loud sounds, had a breakthrough moment during a recent walk near Orston.
As we set off on our walk, the sound of gunfire echoed through the fields. In the past, this would have sent Gatsby into a state of distress—ears back, tail tucked, and body tense. But this time, something was different.
We focused on keeping him engaged through movement and play. With plenty of running, sniffing, and, most importantly, swimming, Gatsby was too busy enjoying himself to react to the gunfire. The distractions we provided—whether splashing in the water or racing along the paths—kept his mind occupied and helped him associate the sounds with positive experiences rather than fear.
This experience was a reminder of how powerful the right tools and techniques can be for nervous dogs. By gradually exposing them to their triggers in a controlled, positive environment, we can help build their confidence and reduce anxiety over time.
If you have a nervous dog, consider how you can introduce fun, high-value distractions when facing their fears. Every small win, like Gatsby’s near Orston, is a step toward a more confident and relaxed pup.
